Designed by Robert Reichert and built for Rear-Admiral Willard Egan and his wife Mary, the Egan House is both literally and figuratively a landmark. Straddling the Eastlake and Capitol Hill neighborhoods, this bold, sculptural home, dramatically sited in the St. Mark’s greenbelt, is both emblematic of and in contrast with midcentury modern architecture. While Reichert prioritized the “economy and material innovation” of the time he also described his designs as “romantic rather than functional…sculptural in form and traditional in mannerism.”. The Egan House, with its stark geometric shapes and sleek black and white (with a touch of red) color scheme unapologetically emphasizes its stand-out qualities. Some interior details including the “floating” staircase, open volumes, and built-in cabinetry were aligned with a formal Modernist approach, while the exterior and structure were imbued with romance and an art-first attitude. A 188 square foot triangular deck, added in 1987, provides vital outdoor entertaining space and is in keeping with the geometric nature of the home.
